Turkey Threatens NATO


The Middle East conflict between Russia and Turkey being played out in Syria has a real possibility of escalating to world shaking proportions.  Business Insider claims, "For most close observers, it has long seemed only a matter of time before the long, bloody proxy war between Turkey and Russia for regional predominance in the Middle East would break out into full-scale direct hostilities."  Of course "close observers" are experts and experts have had a very poor prognostication record in the Middle East.  But a major conflict cannot be ruled out.

Turkey became a full member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1952.  Article 5 of the NATO treaty states that an attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all of its members.  The United States would be obligated to enter a Russian-Turkish conflict according to this treaty.  Of course NATO will not enter a Third World War to save Turkey.  When Russian-backed Syrian forces attacked a Turkish military outpost killing more than 30 Turkish soldiers Business Insider described NATO's response as utterly impotent.  Turkey joined NATO at the beginning of the Cold War when the major threat was the Soviet Union.  Present conflicts frequently involve Islamic groups opposed to the West.  Islamic Turkey sometimes appears to have divided loyalty. 

There is significant evidence that Turkey aided ISIS in the past.  A Foreign Policy article contends that Turkey "helped fuel the rise of the Islamic State in the first place."  30,000 militants traveled through Turkey to Iraq and Syria in 2013 to join the Islamic State.  Turkey was also a major buyer of ISIS extracted crude oil and therefore a major funder of ISIS.  President Putin complained, “We see from the sky where these vehicles [carrying oil] are going.  They are going to Turkey day and night.”.  Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov claimed, “President Erdogan and his family are involved in this criminal business."  Israel’s former Minister of Defense, Moshe Yaalon called Turkey “Hamas’ terror headquarters outside of Gaza.”

There are approximately 3.5 to 4 million migrants in Turkey. Following the immigration crisis of 2015 an agreement was reached where Turkey would restrict migrant crossing in exchange for $6.79 billion in aid.  On Feb. 28 Turkey said it would no longer prevent migrants from crossing as agreed to in 2016.  In response Reuters reported that the European Union pleaded with migrants to remain outside of the EU's borders and to offer Turkey another 500 million euros in aid.  The pleading and 500 million Euros will not accomplish anything.

These migrants are commonly referred to as "Syrian refugees".  However, there is ample evidence that the majority of these "refugees" are not Syrian.  CNN reported on the nationality of migrants arrested by Greek authorities on Friday 28.  252 persons were arrested. 64 percent were Afghani, 19 percent were Pakistani, 5 percent were Turkish, 4 percent were Syrian, 2.6 percent were Somalian, and those from Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Egypt comprised 5.4 percent.  
Reuters reported that about a quarter of the migrants at the border are Syrian.  The rest are Afghans, Pakistanis, Iranians and Africans.  Referring to them as Syrian gives them status as war refugees.  But many are like Fawzi Uzbek, 37, an Afghan national.  He wants to reach Germany but would probably go back to Istanbul, where he has been working in a factory for about 18 months.

There is evidence that Turkish President Erdogan is emptying his prisons of foreign criminals and using police to escort them to the Greek border.  Turkish authorities have supported the migrants in their increasingly violent attempts to cross the border.  They have been throwing Molotov cocktails and used tear gas reportedly obtained from the Turks.  There is even a video of Turkish police firing rear gas at Greek border agents.  Turkish police were encouraging migrants to attack the Greek police force.

Erdogan is using these "refugees" in order to secure more cash and greater European support for his conflict with Russia.  He is well aware, as are the leaders of Europe, that this influx of refugees would be a social and financial disaster.  Yet when Greece announced that it would not accept any asylum applications for one month the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees criticized their decision.  Interior Minister, Süleyman Soylu, claims the refugee invasion will result in “The governments in Europe will change, their economies will deteriorate, their stock markets will collapse.”  Erdogan claimed back in September that he would ‘flood the gates of Europe’ with refugees if Europe didn’t support Turkey in housing of refugees.

Senator Chuck Schumer's threats could lead to dire consequences.




Senator Chuck Schumer is under pressure for threatening two Supreme Court Justices.  At a pro-abortion rally outside the Supreme Court on 4 March Schumer ranted,  “I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”  He later clarified this statement on the Senate floor by saying, "In no way was I making a threat."  It is up to the public to decide if Schumer's remarks were a threat.  Chief Justice John Roberts, however, did interpreted Schumer's remarks as a threat.

Roberts wrote, “This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside.  Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell them that ‘You have released the whirlwind . . . Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous"  Senator Schumer's spokesman Justin Goodman accused Roberts of deliberately misinterpreting the New York senator’s comments.

Threat or not, in these emotional time, remarks about releasing the whirlwind can lead to violence.  People referred to as "deplorables" are frequently described as "Nazis."  This, in some minds, justifies violence against them.  Fredo Cuomo explained, "Fighting hate is right. And in a clash between hate and those who oppose it, those who oppose it are on the side of right.  People who show up to fight against bigots are not to be judged the same as the bigots, even if they do resort to the same kinds of petty violence."

There have been numerous calls for violence by "progressive" politicians.  Maxine Waters famously said, “If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them! And you tell them that they are not welcome, anymore, anywhere.”  Senator "Spartacus" Booker advised, "get up in the face of some congresspeople."  Eric Holder told Democratic activists: "When they go low, we kick ‘em."  And of course the former President's remark, "If They Bring a Knife to the Fight, We Bring a Gun"

People in the entertainment industry have been particularly vehement in their attacks on the President.  Johnny Depp has "joked" about assassinating the President.  Kathy Griffin posed with the President's severed head. Robert ("I'd like to punch him in the face") De Nero sounds more unbalanced every time he speaks about the President. Snoop Dogg produced a music video which shows the him pulling a gun and shooting a clown version of President Donald Trump.  There are countless examples of entertainers attacking the President and his family.

There are also countless examples of conservative politicians being harassed in public.  Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, Homeland Security Security Kirstjen Nielsen and Senator Ted Cruz and his wife were harassed in restaurants.  Mitch McConnell and his wife were told ‘Why Don’t You Get Out of Here?’ at a Restaurant.  

There are much more serious threats than harassment in public places.  Sen. Rand Paul was assaulted in his Kentucky home where he suffered five rib fractures.  Rep. Steve Scalise nearly died as a result of a man who "brought a gun" to a baseball game.  Now we have a Democrat councilwoman for the city of Denver, Candi CdeBaca, advising people infected with the coronavirus to attend as many Trump rallies as possible.  Candi CdeBaca tweeted, “For the record, if I do get the coronavirus I’m attending every MAGA rally I can.”  CdeBaca knows that the coronavirus can be fatal.  She may be joking but there are enough unstable people out there who will take her advice.  Chuck Schumer has been around.  He also knows that his comments could lead to dire consequences.
